Hierarchy uses key principles to emphasize certain characteristics of a design. Composition is the arrangement of elements in a space. In this project, I designed a title card for a new series on a streaming service, utilizing skills in hierarchy and composition. I used Photoshop for the project. I created four versions of the title card. One version utilized hand lettering skills. 

I used different elements to create hierarchy in my title cards. In the first two versions, there wasn't much contrast in scale between the texts. I decreased the point size of "CITY OF" and increased the tracking to create a contrast in the title. I also decreased the point size of the description and genre to add to the hierarchy. This also added more white space to the composition. Because of the changes I made, the overall hierarchical organization is stronger.

I used compositional principles to improve my title cards. Balance was the most important thing to me. I wanted there to be a strong balance between elements. In the first version, there wasn't much balance between the subject and the title. I decided to change the picture so that the subject and title were separated. By separating the subject from the title and description, the composition had more balance. 

The compositional theory I used for my final iteration was the rule of thirds. I moved the subject on a line of the third. I moved the title to the cross of a third. I also moved the description to a line of the third. By using the rule of thirds, the composition of my title card had more visual hierarchy and balance. I knew about the rule of thirds, but I did not know about the golden ratio. Using these theories in the future will improve my work.

I created a version of my title card using hand lettering. I am used to brush lettering and calligraphy. This was a challenge for me to make hand lettering that fit the theme of a crime drama. In my second version of hand lettering, I cleaned up the lines and made sure the line weight was even. I used lines to lockup the text and create visual weight. The text is stacked, but there is visual hierarchy created by the lines.
